Irrigation project drives production changes and socio-environmental benefits

With a focus on sustainability and efficiency, the Irrigation 4.0 Project, from Companhia Mineira de Açúcar e Álcool (CMAA), has as its main purpose to provide greater predictability and stability in sugarcane production, reducing vulnerability to climate variations.

The company's goal is a significant reduction in the number of agricultural operations, thanks to the application of phytosanitary products and fertilizers via an irrigation system, contributing to more efficient production and without causing damage to the environment.

The environmental impacts of the Irrigation 4.0 Project are positive, including a reduction in the use of chemical inputs, and consequently a decrease in CO2 emissions and an increase in the issuance of Carbon Credits (CBIOs) per hectare cultivated. Moreover, the system is expected to achieve greater water efficiency compared to conventional methods, resulting in less agricultural land needed, and contributing to the preservation of natural resources. In addition to the impacts on the environment, this project also brings social benefits, such as the increase in direct and indirect jobs in the area and a reduction in transportation, harvesting and transshipment costs.
